Dental Root Canal
A root canal is a common treatment used to save a tooth that has decayed or become infected. In a root canal procedure, (also called a pulpectomy) the tooth nerve and tooth pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without this treatment, a tooth with bad decay will cause tissue surrounding the tooth to become infected, which can in turn lead to abscesses and other infection.
“Root canal” is the term used to describe the natural channel leading to the center of the tooth, which lends its name to the procedure. The tooth’s nerve lies within the root canal.
Despite what you may think, a tooth’s nerve is not vital to a tooth’s health and function after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth.
