Gum Disease Treatment in Kitchener

Bleeding when you brush, gums that look red or swollen, and bad breath that won’t go away are common early signs of gum disease. Left alone, it can lead to receding gums, loose teeth and tooth loss. At Fairway Dental in Kitchener we treat gum disease and help you keep it under control. Call 519-893-9494 to book.

Gingivitis and periodontitis

Gingivitis is the early stage. The gums are inflamed but the bone holding your teeth hasn’t been affected, and it can usually be reversed with a professional cleaning and better daily care. Periodontitis is the more advanced stage, where the infection has started to damage the bone and the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets.

Signs to watch for

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Gums pulling back from your teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • Teeth that feel loose or a bite that feels different

How we treat it

  • Professional cleaning for early gum inflammation
  • Scaling and root planing, often called a deep cleaning, which removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces so the gums can heal
  • Periodontal maintenance, which means regular follow-up cleanings at a schedule that suits your gums, to keep the disease from coming back

Some advanced cases need gum surgery or gum grafts. We don’t do these at our office, but we can refer you to a specialist and keep looking after the rest of your dental care here.

What you can do at home

  • Brush twice a day along the gumline with a soft brush
  • Clean between your teeth every day with floss or small interdental brushes
  • Don’t smoke, since smoking makes gum disease worse and slows healing
  • Keep up your regular cleanings and checkups

Insurance, direct billing and CDCP

We bill most plans directly, including the Canadian Dental Care Plan. See our CDCP page for details.
